1. What is the meaning of the good lord bird?
What does it represent? How does it
connect to to the title of the book?
The good lord bird is a species of woodpecker that is native to Kansas. When Onion and Fredrick were tying the horses up near a river, Fred wanted to show Onion something special. Fred states that the its got its name because when a man sees it, he states "good lord."(30) The birds feathers are good luck charms.

What is Henry’s nickname? How did he earn it?
Henry's nickname is Onion. He got this nickname when he ate an old onion- fourteen months to be exact- that the Old Man gave him. It wasn't suppose to be eaten and he was suppose to keep it for good luck. (23)
3. What was Henry’s rationale for
continuing to live a lie? Was it
justifiable?
j One of Henry's most frequent excuses to live a lie is that he is a prisoner. Multiple times he mentions how he did things he did not want to do, such as allude that he is a women. At first, this lie was justifiable at this point it is becoming creepy.
